LAHORE: Sri Lanka were 89-2 in their first innings at lunch on the opening day of the second Test against Pakistan at the Gaddafi Stadium here on Sunday.
After Pakistan captain Younis Khan won the toss and put Sri Lanka into bat, Malinda Warnapura and Tharanga Paranavitana opened the innings but both the openers lost their wickets to paceman Umar Gul.
First to go was Warnapura, caught by Misbah-ul-Haq at slip in the fifth over for eight runs and later Paranavitana went for 21 caught at gully by Shoaib Malik. Thus, Sri Lanka lost two wickets for 35 runs.
Then Kumar Sangakkara and captain Mahela Jayawardene got together and carried the score to 89 by lunch.
Sangakkara is batting on 30 while Jayawardene, who made 240 in the previous Test, is on 25. Both have so far added 54 runs for the third wicket.
Jayawardene is playing his final Test as captain.
Umar Gul claimed two wickets for 26 runs while debutant pacer Mohammad Talha, Yasir Arafat and leg-spinner Danish Kaneria did not yet took any wicket.
